Stop Guessing What’s Working, Start Knowing

Take the guesswork out of your business development strategy. Rebecca digs into how tracking data can drive success.

I get it. Numbers aren’t sexy.

If you’re in business development, you probably live for the thrill of the deal, the art of persuasion, the high of a closed sale.

Data? That’s not exactly your idea of a good time.

So when a client walks into OneTable Strategy’s offices and says, “We have sales goals, but we’re tracking basically nothing along the way,” I sigh. But only internally. Mostly. Because I know what they’re going to say next.

“But we feel like we’re doing fine.”

Ah, yes, the familiar gut instinct strategy. This ad campaign gives me good vibes, so it must be helping to grow my business.

Here’s the problem: Feelings don’t write checks. Feelings don’t reveal which leads are warming up and which ones are ice cold. Feelings don’t tell you where to focus your time, energy, and ad spend.

This particular client, and so many others like them, had a solid list of potential customers, but they didn’t have an actual plan for how to reach them. They didn’t have a way of tracking who was engaging, and they definitely didn’t have a system for deciding when to double down.

Just vibes.

Set Aside the Vibes and Pick Up a Blueprint

Don’t get me wrong, I love good vibes over an ad campaign, but there’s a time and a place for the touchy-feely stuff. If it doesn’t convert in data land, though, what magic does it actually have?

So, our team came together with Good Vibes Guy and we built a blueprint. We mapped out all of the metrics that would serve as “checkpoints” in their biz dev strategy. Those checkpoints would help us see whether their marketing efforts were actually moving the needle.

We layered on a marketing strategy that targeted the same audience through different channels—digital ads and direct outreach—that made a multi-touch approach designed to work together.

And then, we watched.

Soon enough, the data started talking. Engagement ticked up from certain prospects. Patterns began to emerge.

One morning, our client sent out a round of communications to their list, and within ten minutes, three high-value prospects responded.

Voila. Success. It wasn’t a hunch or a feeling that got them there. It took a measurable shift to point them to where their best opportunities were.

Shift from Magic to Method

This isn’t magic. It’s method. It seems simple because it is.

But the thing is that knowing when and how to take the next step can feel overwhelming… even if you’ve got the data screaming to go in one particular direction.

That’s where my team and I come in. When you have a guide, you have an accountability partner, someone who can help you interpret the data and make informed decisions based on that information. When you’ve got all that, it doesn’t just remove the guesswork; it gives you clarity, confidence, and a clear path forward.

So, biz dev pros out there—stop guessing, wishing, hoping, and praying you’ll pull the magic lever to drive sales, and start knowing what’s working and what’s not working. Because when you have the data, you have the power to make smarter, faster, better decisions.

And honestly? That’s way more satisfying than any gut feeling could ever be.

If you want to meet up with me and my team, let’s put a blueprint strategy session on the calendar and start finding what metrics you can measure that will guide you toward success.
